Indiana Drivers License and Plate Drama

As Many of you may know Nana and I recently moved to Hobart Indiana. Great town we love the ambiance, the Norman Rockwell Painting feel of the place and surrounding towns. (well maybe not Gary)

I’ve had the most fun trying to get My drivers License and Plates for Both vehicles. First the Indiana BMV requires to see your physical Social Security card. I don’t know about you, but I lost my card with my first wallet back in about 1986. Then Proof of US citizenship (passport, certificate of birth, or other legal residency paperwork from the INS). Proof of new Address (utility bill etc.. This was normal). My Illinois License and I still had to take the written test again. Now is this just their policy (post 911 and Patriot Act I’m sure), or that they don’t trust Illinois verification?

So After waiting 6 weeks for my Social Security card reissue ( I forget how much $$ that cost ). 8 weeks for my Michigan Birth Certificate which was $35 I was able to persuade the state of Indiana to issue me a Drivers license. The entire endeavor taking about 3.5 months. Now I can finally file for my Tax Abatement on the new house..

So Now the Plates. My Buick is a rebuild flood recovery vehicle, My Uncle gets these quite often. I paid no attention to the Georgia Title, I received with the car, that shown this (rebuilt) status. Illinois apparently didn’t either. They issued me a title without this being stated. But this is just the latest road block.. I first on the day of getting my Drivers license tried to get plates for this car as well. I should say plate as Indiana utilizes only a rear plate, where Illinois uses both front and back plates. I first on the day of getting my Drivers license tried to get plates for this car as well. I should say plate as Indiana utilizes only a rear plate, where Illinois uses both front and back plates. Anyway back to the plate(s). Indiana requires their agents to either Physically verify the VIN with the title being submitted, or use a trusted agent such as a police officer to verify it. I of course didn’t have the car with me at this time. So I left the BMV, retrieved the Buick and returned to the facility. I stood in line for another 20 min. presented all of my information again, I was then asked for an emissions test report. I go back to the car get the report and stand in line another 20 min. Present my information again, I was then informed I need an Indiana emission report. To this I then asked what else I needed as I was not going to stand in line 3 more times to find out there was DNA testing, or patents of Nobility required. I’m sure one could understand my current frustration. Not having time to go get the test done on the car that day, we would have to wait another week to get the emission test done the next Saturday.

The week passes and I am up early Saturday morning to get the car tested. Load up the wife and the new Puppy (more on that drama in another post) and start the car. As Murphy the doom bringer from hell has outlined in his LAW the check engine light comes on, and yes it fails the test, of course.

My Friend and Gearhead bud Floyd Hooked up the computer to the car, We found the problem and reset the onboard computer. Now Back to emissions, the car passed and we head back to the BMV. Now comes the Georgia Title issue I was noting earlier. After hanging out in line, they verified the VIN again and all was going fine.. Then Indiana states they cannot issue a title until ( I ) get the title corrected from Illinois.

The call to Illinois Secretary of State for this issue was the most painless interfaces I’v ever had with Illinois. I was amazed. The Rep looked up the Georgia Title they keep on Microfilm, and said it was issued incorrectly and to mail in the title with a cover letter explaining the error to them for corrected reissue. I was floored.

This is where we end the current post. I’m still waiting for the corrected title from Illinois

I will of course update this as the drama unfolds.
